Senate Information

The Faculty Senate is a democratically elected legislative body, dedicated to representing the collective voice of our faculty and contributing meaningfully to the governance of the University. Among its powers are adoption of changes in the Faculty Manual and other legislation, approval of new programs, centers and institutes, and new degrees, majors, minors, certificates, and tracks. It conducts periodic evaluations of chairs, deans and the Provost. It monitors academic life, and either legislates on or makes recommendations concerning the wellbeing of the faculty and the continued improvement of the University. Its committees and hearing panels consider such vital matters as denial of tenure; termination for cause; allegations of unprofessional conduct; and disputes concerning rank, salary and conditions of employment.

With a strong commitment to faculty welfare and the continuous enhancement of academic life, the Senate addresses important issues through its committees and hearing panels. These include tenure decisions, employment concerns, professional conduct, and more—ensuring all matters are handled with integrity and care.

The Senate’s work is made possible by dedicated officers, the Committee on General Welfare (GWC), a network of standing and ad hoc committees, and regular meetings of elected Senators. Close collaboration with the University President, Provost, senior leadership, and the Board of Trustees ensures that faculty perspectives help guide institutional decisions.

The Faculty Senate is your instrument, along with the School Councils, for participation in our collegial governance.  The Senate thrives when it reflects the ideas, priorities, and energy of its faculty.  Your voice matters and we encourage you to join our efforts.
