As the official legislative body of the University of Miami, the Faculty Senate serves as a platform for collaborative dialogue across academic units.
The Faculty Senate plays a vital role in shaping policies that extend across multiple colleges, schools, and major academic divisions. With a collaborative spirit and a commitment to the university’s collective well-being, the Senate leads efforts to review and legislate items that reflect the values and priorities of the broader university community.
Regular Senate Meetings are open to all members of the UNIVERSITY FACULTY, as defined in the Faculty Manual A2.1(b), as well as invited guests. Only Senate members, or alternates attending in place of a member, may vote, and election meetings are open only to Senate members.
Once each semester, the President hosts a Senate meeting so that UNIVERSITY FACULTY may attend and ask questions related to current issues. Meetings hosted by the President have no set agenda or materials.
Meetings of the General Welfare Committee (GWC) are held in "executive session," meaning they are open only to GWC members, or alternates attending in place of a member. Proponents are invited to speak to their topics, but votes are taken in executive session and materials are confidential.
